Blossoms of Friendship by Vimala Thakar has become
one of my favorite books about the more subtle aspects of yoga. It is
composed of a series of talks given in Mount Abu, India, in 1973, but they
seem as relevant to our daily practice as if they were written today, and
are as timeless as Patanjali's Sutras.
Vimala Thakar has been leading
meditation retreats since the 1960s, after meetings with Krishamurti
culminated in his instruction to her to devote herself to dispelling
ignorance. In this series of talks, given, as she says, in the spirit of
friendship, she does just that. Vimala tells us that it is not knowledge
that dispels ignorance, but understanding—and it is through our practice of
meditation that we can achieve understanding. Our meditation practice allows
us to observe ourselves throughout the day, to bring our practice off the
mat. Vimala urges us to follow the path of inquiry to pursue understanding
that provides "clarity, lucidity . . . light." She says, "Understanding
enlightens you." This is part of what we seek when we follow the path of
yoga, and what we need to find.
While reading, I found myself continuously
underlining inspirational passages and when the book ended I wanted more.
Although we may know that it is good to meditate, we don't always know why.
Vimala, in the blossoms of her talks of friendship, holds up the light and
shows us why.
